The Bakers (stylized simply as “Bakers”) were in fact a dozen musicians trying to make sense of their changing planet. Their favorite eatery, Mother McCree’s Country Bakery, where they had fatefully met during Free Frosting Friday, was rumored to be selling their shop to an intergalactic corporate chain ready to distribute synthetic treats and stale caffeinated beverages. The Bakers sprang into action and organized a benefit concert to raise enough funds to purchase the store and keep it part of the community. The only problem was, no bands were willing to participate! During the chaos of their planning, they had failed to acknowledge their own musical talent, focusing instead on local bands and global acts. With the show about to start and no one in the wings, the dozen members of Bakers took to the stage to confusion and booing. They had never practiced, they had never played together, yet their guitars sang, their synthesizers cooed, and their drums banged out 39 straight tunes, serenading the crowd for almost four hours. The resulting music was recorded by a star-struck fan on a portable tape-recorder and then pressed to vinyl. With the ticket sales of the concert and the resulting album sales, Mother McCree’s Country Bakery returned to the community, safe and sound. If you should ever find yourself in the Confectionary Galaxy, stop on by and pick up a Bakers Dozen.
